Power-Line Carrier (Narrowband)
Available Models
  • UPLC Universal Power-Line Carrier
The UPLC platform is built upon digital signal processing and PowerPC® technology using proven hardware and firmware from the TC-10B/TCF-10B family and can be used whenever these previous version PLCs were applied. Combining modern technology with Pulsar’s years of experience in design and application has resulted in the most advanced power-line carrier available anywhere.

  • TC-10B ON/OFF Power-Line Carrier
The TC-10B is an "on-off" type PLC particularly suited for Directional Comparison Blocking or Phase Comparison Blocking schemes. It is available with Maintenance Voice and Automatic Checkback options

  • TCF-10B FSK Power-Line Carrier
The TCF-10B is a frequency-shift keyed type PLC particularly suited for Directional Comparison Unblocking or Phase Comparison Unblocking relay schemes and Direct Transfer Trip. A full-duplex maintenance voice channel and three-frequency configurations are available as options.

  • LPA 50/100 Linear Amplifier
Applications for PLC with high attenuation may require more transmitter power than the standard 10/20 watts. The LPA50 and LPA100 are available for these applications. They are typically applied where line attenuation is a serious problem as in extremely long lines (150 miles (242 km) or more) or where underground cable is used for all or part of the line. Combining cable with overhead lines creates an impedance mismatch between the 20 to 60 ohm cable and the 150 to 300 ohm overhead line. This mismatch can cause a portion of the carrier signal to be reflected back to the transmit end, attenuating the signal significantly.

The LPA50 and LPA100 are linear amplifiers which allow several frequencies to be passed through without intermodulation or custom filters. No adjustments or settings are required for any transmit frequency. By combining two or more frequencies at the lower levels, hybrids can be eliminated; thus increasing the resultant power output. Up to three frequencies can be combined using the LPA100 with each frequency having more than 10 watts of power going into the line tuner. That is: 100 watts divided by the square of the number of frequencies.

  • UCBS Standalone Checkback
The Universal Carrier Checkback System (UCBS) provides periodic testing of "on-off" carrier sets other than the TC-10B (which incorporates this same checkback internally.) The UCBS determines the viability of the complete channel including the transmitters, receivers and associated coupling equipment. Periodic testing is required for the normally "off" channel, to provide warning of signal deterioration prior to needing it for relaying, The UCBS facilitates automatic testing of the channel at preset intervals.

  • RF Hybrids
When paralleling two or more transmitters or paralleling transmitters with receivers, hybrids are used to insure proper combining and separation of signals. Hybrids present a high signal loss between inputs known as return loss, while presenting a low loss from input to output (insertion loss).

Specialty Interfaces
Available Models
  • MBT 9600 Four Wire Modem for SEL Mirrored-Bits®
The MBT9600 is a dedicated four wire modem designed for use with Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories Inc. protective relays which use "Mirrored Bits" Relay-to-Relay logic communications. These relays use 9600 bps asynchronous communications as an integral part of mirrored bit logic communications for protection, monitoring and control.
